 Shandong University of Science and Technology (SUST) is noted for its basic research, applied research and its future potential for scientific and technological innovation, and enjoys a competitive academic advantage from its cross-disciplinary and multi-disciplinary approach. It boasts over 8 specialized research institutes, including Resource and Environment Engineering, Material Science, Mine Pressure, Engineering Explosion, Special Exploitation, Automation, Intelligence Engineering and Engineering Economy. It also has over 80 comprehensive research institutes, including System Engineering, Electro-mechanical Technology, Space Information, Electronic Engineering, Computer Applications, Financial Mathematics, Computational Models and Algorithm, Engineering Costing, Technological Philosophy, Enterprise Image-making, Chinese Literature and Applied Law. More than 200 full-time researchers work in these institutes. The university has undertaken numerous national, ministerial, provincial and municipal level scientific programs and has made 312 important scientific and technological achievements. It has won 282 awards at national, provincial and ministerial level, including the National Invention Prize and the National Progress Prize in Science and Technology. The university holds 183 national patents. Since 1990, SUST has undertaken 16 National High Technology Research and Development programs (863 Program), 6 secondary National Foundation Research and Development programs (973 program), nearly 80 National Natural Science Foundation programs and State Social Science Fund programs(including 1 key National Natural Science Foundation program, 1 key international cooperation program and 1 National Outstanding Youth Foundation program), 12 National Key Research Programs of Science and Technology, 1 key international inter-governmental cooperation program under the auspices of the Technology Ministry, 1 program supported by the Fund for the Doctoral Program of the Education Ministry and more than 200 other ministerial and provincial programs. SUST??s annual funding for scientific research has been over 100 million RMB for the past two years.
