 Shandong University of Science and Technology (SUST), founded in 1951, is a provincial key university, offers comprehensive education in engineering, science, management, humanities and law, economics, education while giving prominence to engineering and the integration of science and engineering. SUST is located in Qingdao, a pleasant coastal city, with a total area of 3 square kilometers. It has two branches situated respectively in Tai'an-a tourist resort well-known for Mt. Taishan, and Jinan-the provincial capital known as a "city of springs".There are 15 schools plus 9 affiliated teaching departments, with a total of 67 majors for undergraduates, 76 master's degree programs, 23 doctoral programs, 2 multi-disciplinary post doctoral programs. SUST currently enrolls 31,000 full-time students, including 2600 doctoral and master's degree candidates as well as over 28000 adult education undergraduates. SUST has an excellent faculty with a total of 2600, including 770 senior academics, 224 professors and 401 associate professors and 3 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences; 1 academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering; 5 foreign academicians of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences; 9 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering are also engaged as adjunct professors. SUST has the advantage of offering both an advanced scientific base and a rigorous academic foundation in fields including Mining Engineering, Safety Engineering, Robotic Research, Geotechnical Engineering, Surveying and Mapping Science and Technology, Mechanical and Electronic Engineering, Control Theory and Computing Science and Technology. SUST has undertaken numerous national, ministerial, provincial and municipal level scientific programs and achieved fruitful results in over 200 programs. SUST has also made 312 important scientific and technological achievements, and has won 282 awards at national, provincial and ministerial level, including the National Invention Prize and the National Progress Prize in Science and Technology. The university holds 183 national patents. Since 1990, SUST has undertaken 16 National High Technology Research and Development programs (863 Program) and 6 secondary National Foundation Research and Development programs (973 program), nearly 80 National Natural Science Foundation programs and State Social Science Fund programs, 12 National Key Research Programs of Science and Technology and 1 key international inter-governmental cooperation program under the auspices of the Technology Ministry and 200 ministerial and provincial programs. SUST??s funding for scientific research in 2004 reached 100.17million RMB. SUST 's library has 1.5 million books ,over 8000 kinds of Chinese online magazines and 6000 kinds of foreign online magazines are available. There are 34 computer labs with 3094 computers and servers installed with Microsoft,Unix and Linux system. SUST actively promotes academic exchanges and cooperation between international universities. The university has been active in developing the internationalization of education. Currently the university has academic partnerships with educational and scientific institutions in more than 15 countries. SUST has established cooperation and exchange with more than 50 universities and academic institutions abroad and carried out more than 40 international technology cooperation programs . |
